The World Memory Championships were first held in 1991, and have taken place annually since then. The format has occasionally changed over the years, but is now fixed as a three day competition, including hour-long cards and numbers disciplines. Dominic O'Brien won eight of the first ten world championships.
The first German championship took place in 1997, and national championships have now spread to the USA, China, Austria, Japan, Mexico, Poland and others, with more competitors from more countries joining every year.
The aim of the Cambridge championships is to encourage more British competitors to get involved in what we call "memory sports". It's a rewarding, challenging, enjoyable hobby, and you get to meet a lot of interesting people.
